What StarShort actually is
A small, fast-growing catalogue with the worst recent review record of anything we link to. It is published by Smile Lives Limited, and it carries 873 series across 17 languages, 184 of them in English — about 21% of the library.
We have not put StarShort through a full review, and this page does not pretend otherwise: there is no score on it and there will not be one until somebody here has installed it and paid for their own coins. What follows instead is what can be established without doing that — the size and shape of its catalogue from our own crawl, and what its current users report on the public App Store review feed. Both are things you can check yourself, which is rather the point.
Is the library still growing?
Barely. StarShort added 20 titles in the last thirty days — a trickle next to the hundreds a month the largest apps publish, and the newest thing our crawl can see went up on 12 September 2026. On a library of 873 that is a shelf a regular watcher can work through. It is the single strongest argument for taking the shortest subscription the app offers rather than the discounted long one.

We hold 159 StarShort titles in our own tagged library — a sample of its English catalogue rather than all of it — and the themes they carry are a fair guide to what the app leans on. In order: marriage & contract marriage (82), divorce & betrayal (75), billionaire & ceo (46), revenge (38).
Short drama is a genre of premises rather than plots, so this is more useful than a genre label. An app whose shelf is mostly contract marriage and betrayal is selling a very different evening from one built on mythic fantasy, even though both file under “romance”. If the leading theme above is the thing you came for, this is a reasonable install; if it is not, the app has less for you than its catalogue size suggests.

What StarShort’s users report
StarShort shows 4.39 stars on the App Store from 857 ratings. That figure is doing a lot of hiding. Of the 38 most recent reviews we read, 35 are one star — 92% — and they are not scattered complaints about taste. They cluster tightly on the same few problems, below. A headline average built over years of one-tap five-star ratings can stay high long after the current experience has stopped matching it.

Should you install StarShort?
We link to StarShort and we would not install it. Thirty-five of the thirty-eight most recent reviews we sampled are one star, and they describe the same thing: paying and then being unable to stop paying. Nothing in its catalogue is worth that risk when DramaBox and ReelShort carry the same genres and bill through your app store.
What we would install instead: DramaBox — best short drama app overall — the biggest library and the strongest writing. It is one of the apps we have actually reviewed and paid for, it carries the same genres, and it bills through your app store where you can cancel it yourself.
The gap is not close on the numbers either. DramaBox holds 4.76 stars from 831,333 ratings against StarShort’s 4.39 from 857, and 23% of its recent reviews are one star against 92% here. We are not pretending our pick is flawless — its own page carries the same store record as this one, complaints included. We are saying that on the evidence available it is the better place to spend an evening and a card number, and you can read both and disagree.
How we researched this
Everything above comes from two places. The catalogue figures — how many series, in how many languages, how many arrived this month — are from our own crawl of the distributor’s library, last rebuilt for this page on 2026-09-12. The rating, developer and review quotes are from StarShort’s App Store listing and the public customer-review feed Apple publishes alongside it, checked on 26 August 2026.
What that method can tell you is what an app costs, how big it is, whether it is still publishing and what its users are angry about. What it cannot tell you is whether the writing is any good, where the paywall really lands, or how hard the app pushes an upsell at episode four — and those are the things our FMR score measures, which is why StarShort does not have one.
