It is also the corner that Western genre labels describe worst, which is worth saying plainly because we got it wrong first. These stories have emperors in them, so they kept landing under “historical”, alongside actual period drama about duchesses and succession. They are not the same thing at all: a story about the Emperor of Heaven is fantasy with a Chinese setting, and someone browsing for court intrigue in a real dynasty is not looking for a beastmaster.
What makes the good ones work is escalation with rules. Cultivation stories run on a visible ladder — ranks, trials, ascension — and the format suits that better than almost anything else, because each ninety-second episode can be one rung. The weak ones hand the lead a new power whenever the plot stalls, which drains the ladder of meaning by about episode thirty.
Expect the effects to vary as much as anywhere in the catalogue, and expect the translations to work harder: this genre carries more proper nouns, ranks and relationships than any other, and a rushed subtitle job shows. Give one three or four episodes before deciding.
